Springboard Design - Profile

Waterplay

The most dramatic of our contributions to this award-winning museum is Waterplay; a permanent, interactive play environment based on the characteristics of flow.

A series of translucent and opaque waves define the environment visually, while also transmitting aural water experiences to visitors. Active zones include a fifty foot long fiberglass river in which children can float or race boats they create from a kit of parts, as well as a network of intriguing pipes that allow children to connect pipes and fittings to learn about and play with water flows. Children can also don yellow slickers and boots from the dressing area, get wet, perhaps make a few splashes, and then dry off via a bank of dryers.

Springboard’s turned typically mundane elements such as hand dryers into something more, elevating the utility of their use into an experience. This innovative approach was highlighted in Architectural Graphic Standards, 12th Edition as a successful example of transcending code minimums and promoting Universal Design.

The project has been presented in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design in New York City.
