This studio was designed for an established artist in need of a painting studio related to his suburban home. The requirements of the project included high ceilings, uninterrupted ‘working walls’ for painting, skylights, and northern exposure. The site was behind an existing attached garage that the artist had converted into a workshop; a new painting studio in relation to the workshop would more than double his work space.
Springboard’s design solution creates a painting studio that could double as a pool house in the future. The 600 sf studio features a 20 foot wide garage door that enables the artist to open the space up to his garden and swimming pool. The transition between the level of the existing garage workshop and the new painting studio is mediated by a sculptural staircase with steel railings. The stair also opens up to an existing basement that had previously only been accessible from outside.
