SPRINGBOARD’s award-winning studio, the recipient of a 2004 Cool Space Locator Award, is located in Pittsburgh’s Terminal Buildings, the largest warehouse structure between New York and Chicago. Built in 19o6, the Terminal Buildings sit on the south side of the Monongahela River, and afford dramatic views of downtown, and direct access to riverfront bike and jogging trails and South Side shops and restaurants.
Described as ‘an office worker’s dream’ in Pulp Magazine, SPRINGBOARD’s studio exemplifies our approach to tailoring workplaces to fit a company’s functional needs and organizational culture.
SPRINGBOARD’s studio illustrates our ability to create comfortable and inspiring workplaces. The Terminal Buildings have good bones: large floor plates, high ceilings, solid masonry construction, exposed brick walls, great views of a historical neighborhood and is within walking distance of shops and restaurants. However, before SPRINGBOARD renovated, the space was a disaster; in fact, the building owner has said that it was “the worst space in the building.”
SPRINGBOARD’s design capitalizes on the space’s existing strengths and features exposed brick walls, high ceilings exposed round ducts, and a combination of sealed concrete floors and carpeting.
The office was divided into three parts: a flexible and open studio for the architects, designers and creative staff; an enclosed multi-purpose space, dubbed ‘The Green Room,’ used for meetings, workshops and project development; and SPRINGBOARD Space, a gallery space devoted to exhibiting new media art work by emerging artists. The industrial door that marks the threshold of The Green Room was found elsewhere in The Terminal Building and reinstalled at SPRINGBOARD.
All furnishings in SPRINGBOARD’s office are on wheels or skids and allow for change. The office is easily reconfigurable for project teaming and collaboration.
